Genesys Emergency Department Details:                    ​          
The ED at Genesys is a Level-II Trauma Center with 50 beds (plus a 7 bed physician triage area). We see approximately 67,000 patients per year with an admission rate of 38% .We are a STEMI center and a nationally recognized stroke center of excellence.

How are emergency department shift schedules organized?
All shifts are 9 hours in length. While in the ED 1st and 2nd year residents have 18 shifts per block; 3rd and 4th years have 17 shifts per EM block.

How many EM residents do you accept per year?
We accept 6 residents per year.  

What are your application requirements?  
Required documents include your ERAS application, USMLE/COMLEX scores, two letters of recommendation, transcripts, Dean's letter, and an ECFMG certificate for IMG's.

What is your interview start date and end date?
Our interview season typically runs from September/October to December/January of each academic year.  CLICK HERE for this year's interview dates.   

What type of academic benefits can residents expect?
PGY 1-2 and PGY 3-4 receive, respectively, a $500 and $825 biannual educational stipend to help with the cost of board examinations, medical equipment. Residents have access to free MSU lectures and procedural workshops, as well as CMU's simulation center for extra hands-on practice.

Additionally, USACS provides each emergency medicine resident with memberships to UpToDate, EMRA/EMRAM/Corpendium, ACEP, as well as access to other ITE/National board prep services such as RoshReview and HippoEM Podcast Subscription. Henry Ford covers the cost of ACLS/BLS/ATLS/PALS, medical license, and fingerprinting. Please see "Additional Benefits" section for more information.​

Are residents allowed to moonlight?
Yes, provided  you are in good academic standing with the program.   

Where do we train?
We primarily work out of Henry Ford Genesys but are affiliated with Hurley Medical Center, Corewell Hospital-Royal Oak and Detroit Medical Center.  CLICK HERE to check out our curriculum section to find out more.  
What is there to do in the area?
From skiing to great restaurants, sporting events, museums, golfing, breweries, camping, hunting, there is always something to do in Michigan. Our residents also travel to the Upper Peninsula, Mackinac Island, and Traverse City.

Do you sponsor visas for international students?

No, we do not sponsor visas.

I am a medical student, but unfortunately could not rotate with the program. What should I do?
We are always open to students shadowing in our department; in fact, we encourage it! Contact the student coordinator, chief residents, and/or assistant program director for more information. 

What are your Trauma statistics?
Henry Ford Genesys Hospital is an American College of Surgery designated Level II Trauma Center. The Emergency Department has approximately 67,000 visits annually of which 16,000 are trauma related. Of those, 93% are blunt trauma and 7% are penetrating injuries.  Our trauma service has less complications, wound infection rates, ventilator days and ICU utilization compared to the benchmark set by Michigan trauma centers.

Additional Benefits?
Residents can opt in to medical insurance, dental/optical insurance, disability and accident insurance, life insurance, and professional liability insurance. Henry Ford offers a 403(b) plan and matches contributions up to 3.5%. Residents also have access to financial advisers to help with maximizing contributions, investing, retirement planning, and more.
Residents also receive monogrammed lab coats, on-call quarters, free on site parking, 20 days of PTO, and a meal stipend ($1500/year). There is also a discounted membership available to residents at our state-of-the-art, on-site athletic center ($189 for general public, $40 for residents).
